I’ve been wanting to buy Colourpop products for quite a while but the shipping fee and possible customs charge really put me off. Colourpop recently had a “Free International Shipping” event if you spent $30. Of course, I stupidly didn’t research enough into the customs charges, but if you read on, I’ll tell you how you can avoid them if you are in the U.K.
I placed an order for lip products and a couple of blushers, which came to $30, and paid for that, hoping that if I kept the order to bang on the $30, I wouldn’t get a customs charge. In the first order, I got the following:
The blushers (Holiday and Aphrodisiac) are creamy at first but then go powdery. I’ll use Aphrodisiac to contour. Out of the Aquarius lip collection, I like the satin and matte products the best. The Lippie Stix (Skimpy) is moisturising and good for everyday wear as a neutral shade.
I then chatted to a friend on Instagram and she suggested the eyeshadows so I looked back at the website. I keep going for the same sorts of colours with eyeshadows recently, so I went a bit different with light colours, pinks and purples. The eyeshadows are very buttery and blendable. I also think they will be buildable although the swatches look quite light, on my finger they were very pigmented. With this order I also got two free brushes (which I forgot to picture!).
The orders didn’t take too long to arrive, considering they were coming from the US, and you can track them online. However… I was hit with the dreaded customs charges, so it took slightly longer for me to get them after paying online. The worst thing about it is that Royal Mail very kindly add £8 “handling fee” onto the charge. So because I had placed two separate orders, I was hit twice with that too, meaning in total I had to pay £32.52 extra to get my parcels!
Unfortunately, as you’ll have noticed, two of the eyeshadows got broken in transit and Colourpop weren’t exactly overly keen on sending me out two replacements. To start with they sent me a coupon code to use online, but it couldn’t be used in conjunction with free shipping. As you can imagine, I wasn’t too happy with that! So after a few emails back and forward they eventually decided they would refund me.
So… how can you avoid the ridiculous customs charges if you’re in the U.K.? Well, your order needs to be under £15 total (you would need to work with the exchange rate at the time of purchasing). Colourpop declare the price of everything on their shipping label, including items that they have given you for free, meaning the customs charge increases, how nice of them! For example, one of my orders totaled $30, but I got two free brushes that were $6 value each, so on the box my declared value was $42. That is something you have to be really careful with. Colourpop did do a “free international shipping” event with no minimum spend limit very recently, so you could get round the charges by placing small orders that totaled up to £15 that way.
